An African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain and former secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), has said Peter Obi was never truly committed to the party.
Lawal made these claims on Tuesday in an Arise Television Prime Time interview.
His remarks comes barely two days after Obi and former Kano governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso left the ADC to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The duo premised their defection on ADC’s “endless court cases, internal battles” and uncertainties regarding the party’s future.

Responding to the development, Lawal said Obi joined the coalition late and was never fully invested in its structure.
He further said, “Peter Obi joined the coalition after it had all begun for quite a long time. He had always been somebody that is very shifty when it came to ADC. We never felt his heart was in it.”
Lawal said the party leadership allowed the former Anambra governor to choose the organising secretary as a compromise, but it did not work.
He also added that although the offer aimed to reassure him about the party’s internal processes, concerns about his commitment persisted. The former SGF went on to say that Obi’s departure from the party was due to his “fear of open contest.”
Lawal further stated that the ADC leadership was dedicated to upholding equity among its members, many of whom he characterised as powerful individuals with diverse goals.
