Senate President

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Adams Oshiomhole, senator representing Edo north engaged in an intense word battle on Wednesday.

The word battle comes barely 24 hours after the red chamber amended its standing rules to restrict leadership positions to senators who have served at least two consecutive terms.

The clash disrupted proceedings for about 10 minutes.

Oshiomhole made a point of order, but the Senate President reminded him that the Senate Standing Orders 2023 (as amended) prohibit such interventions at that point.

As Oshiomhole persisted, Akpabio called on Orji Kalu, the former Chief Whip, to clarify the rule.

Kalu then confirmed that no point of order is permitted while the votes and proceedings are being considered.

However, despite the clarification, Oshiomhole continued to maintain his objection, causing the Senate Whip, Senator Tahir Monguno, to caution him against further disruption, adding that disciplinary measures could be invoked.

Afterward, Akpabio urged lawmakers to familiarise themselves with the rules and directed them to pages 194 and 195 of the Votes and Proceedings.

Additionally, the Senate President also issued a stern warning to Oshiomhole to refrain from further disruptive conduct.

BACKSTORY…

An amendment to the Senate standing rules now makes only senators who have served at least two consecutive terms eligible for presiding and principal offices.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio presided over a voice vote that resulted in the amendment’s adoption on Tuesday.

The decision coincides with rumours that former senators Ovie Omo-Agege, Hope Uzodimma, and Ifeanyi Okowa are thinking about returning to the red chamber and possibly running for Senate president in 2027.

According to the updated regulations, only senators who have served in the body continuously for at least eight years are eligible to run for Senate President and Deputy President.
