Aminu Tambuwal, the legislator running for the Sokoto South Senatorial District in the general elections of 2027, has withdrawn from the contest in shocking twist.

Following this, the African Democratic Congress, has nominated former House of Representatives Speaker Faruk Yabo as a consensus candidate to succeed him.

Recall that Tambuwal was a presidential aspirant in the 2023 general elections under the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) platform but resigned in favour of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Similarly, Manir Muhammad Dan’iya, who served as Tambuwal’s deputy governor while he was governor of Sokoto State, has emerged as the ADC consensus candidate for governor in the state’s 2027 election.

Meanwhile, critics have flagged Tambuwal’s decision to quit, especially given his prior appeals for Nigerians to unite and unseat the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

His followers have also raised concerns as to why he made this abrupt decision and how it would impact the party’s prospects in the next elections.

ADC under pressure

In advance of the 2027 elections, the ADC is anticipated to declare its candidates for a number of positions, including the gubernatorial and senatorial seats. It is believed that Yabo’s rise to the top is a calculated attempt to further improve the party’s standing in Sokoto South.

The ADC is under pressure to prove its strength and viability as a rival to the ruling All Progressive Congress as the 2027 elections approach. Yabo’s rise is a test of the party’s capacity to draw in and hold on to elite personnel.

Tambuwal’s shocking decision to step down has also sparked debate regarding his goals and intentions for the future.
