Dangote Refinery increases petrol price to N1,175 per litre

Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has reduced the price of aviation fuel (Jet A1) from N1,750 per litre to N1,650 per litre in a move aimed at easing financial pressure on airlines and ensuring a steady fuel supply across the country.

Additionally, the company announced the price adjustment in a statement sent to DAILY POST on Monday.

This is in addition to a change from a dollar-denominated pricing system to a naira-based model and a 30-day interest-free credit facility backed by bank guarantees (BG) for marketers and aircraft operators.

The development comes amid growing concerns over the rising operational costs facing domestic airlines, with jet fuel accounting for a significant share of airline expenses. Industry stakeholders have repeatedly warned that the increasing cost of Jet A1 is placing severe financial pressure on operators and threatening the sustainability of airline operations.

Meanwhile, the refinery’s decision is expected to reduce fuel procurement costs, improve operational stability, and support efforts to moderate airfares for passengers.

BACKSTORY…

This comes less than a month after the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has warned that airlines across the nation may suspend operations from April 20, 2026, due what it describes as an “astronomical and unsustainable” rise in the price of JetA1 fuel.

AON stated in a letter dated April 14, 2026, to Mr. Clement Isong, Executive Secretary of the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN), that the price of aviation fuel has increased by more than 300 percent in a matter of weeks.

The agency further claimed that the spike is “artificial” and significantly outpaces worldwide trends, pointing out that the price of crude oil has only increased by roughly 30% globally during that time.
