Former Governor of Jigawa State and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sule Lamido, has advised former President Goodluck Jonathan against returning to active politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sule Lamido made his position known in a statement shared on his official Facebook page, where he described Nigeria’s current political climate as “murky,” and dominated by individuals he labeled as self-serving and unserious actors.

He argued that it would be inappropriate to draw Jonathan back into partisan politics at a time when nomination deadlines for the 2027 elections are approaching, saying such a move would not serve the former president’s dignity.

According to him, Jonathan holds a special status as a former Nigerian leader and international statesman, and should preserve the respect associated with that role rather than become involved in what he described as a desperate political struggle.

Lamido stated that growing calls for Jonathan’s return are largely driven by frustration with the country’s current challenges, rather than by any strong ideological or structured political vision.

He further noted that many political parties in the country lack clear ideological foundations, with most driven mainly by the pursuit of power.

The former governor described the renewed calls for Jonathan’s comeback as “desperation-driven,” lacking depth and long-term national interest.

He urged the ex-president not to be swayed by what he called emotional or flattering appeals, insisting that Jonathan should remain above partisan politics for now.

Sule Lamido added that Jonathan could still be considered for future roles, but should not rush back into the political arena at this time.
