Media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu has spoken about his past struggle with smoking addiction and how he eventually overcame it.

He made this known during a recent episode of the MENtality podcast, where he appeared alongside singer Banky W and social media influencer Aproko Doctor.

Ebuka Obi-Uchendu revealed that he first started smoking in JSS3 and remained addicted for about 13 years. He added that by the time he got to university, his consumption had increased significantly, smoking up to two packs of cigarettes daily.

“I started smoking in JSS3. I smoked for 13 years. By the time I entered university, I was smoking two packs a day. I was a heavy smoker,” he said.

Ebuka Obi-Uchendu explained that he was eventually able to quit after making a conscious and intentional decision to break the habit.

In the same discussion, Banky W shared his own experience, revealing that he once developed an addiction to pornography while trying to overcome promiscuity. He noted that he mistakenly believed it was a safer alternative to his previous lifestyle choices.

“I was trying to battle pornography and decided that instead of moving from woman to woman, I should just be watching pornography,” he said.

Ebuka also pointed out that many people fall into similar patterns of replacing one addiction with another while trying to escape harmful habits.

Aproko Doctor added that many addictions are rooted in people’s attempts to avoid emotional pain or seek temporary pleasure.

He explained that human behaviour is often driven by two main desires: avoiding pain and pursuing pleasure, noting that substance abuse and other addictions often stem from attempts to cope with underlying struggles.

The three speakers emphasised the importance of self-awareness, discipline, and intentional self-control as key steps in overcoming negative addictions.
