Trump Makes U-turn, Calls for Immediate Halt to Israel-Iran Attacks

Following the first missile exchange between the two nations since the ceasefire took effect in April, US President Donald Trump has called on Israel and Iran to immediately stop “shooting.”

Meanwhile, Iran launched strikes on Sunday night, hours after Israel claimed it had hit Hezbollah targets in southern Beirut.

In response, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) said the strikes were retaliation for rockets fired at Israel by Hezbollah.

Iran has long maintained that Lebanon should be included in the ceasefire agreement it has with the United States and Israel, but Israel maintains that Lebanon is not covered by the pact, claiming that its fight against Hezbollah will go on.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) described Sunday’s attack as the “beginning of a full week of continuous strikes”.

Before Israel’s reprisal, Trump said he would urge Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to retaliate. However, in a Truth Social post, Trump later said Israel and Iran are looking to do an immediate ceasefire.

He said, “Final negotiations on ‘Peace’ are proceeding, subject to ignorance or stupidity getting in its way. The Blockade will remain in place, and in full force and effect, until a ‘Final Deal’ is reached. Things should move quickly.”

Although, neither side have confirmed they are negotiating a peace deal. Last week, the US and Iran exchanged strikes despite negotiations. Trump said the ceasefire was still in place.

BACKSTORY…
Meanwhile this comes just few days after the US President claimed that Iran’s missile capabilities have been severely depleted, adding that Tehran now has only a fraction of the arsenal it had before recent hostilities.
In an interview with NBC News’ Meet the Press, Trump asserted that the United States had “totally destroyed” the Iranian military apparatus. He estimated that Iran retains only a limited portion of its ballistic missile stockpile.
