Tinubu, Obi Dominate as Nigerians Bet on Presidential Election Outcome

Users of Polymarket, a decentralised global prediction platform, have begun betting on the candidate most likely to win Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.

Checks by TheCable on the platform’s website on Monday showed President Bola Tinubu at the top of the projections.

He currently leads with a 68 percent likelihood rating and more than $14,823 in transaction volume.

Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, comes in second with 25 percent, or $5,937 in trade volume.

Tinubu clinched the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket for the 2027 election last month after polling 10,999,162 votes to defeat his sole challenger, Stanley Osifo, who received 16,503 votes.

Meanwhile, Obi emerged as the NDC presidential candidate unopposed. Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation on the other hand, ranked third with 1.5 percent and $2,748 in trade volume.

The former governor of Rivers lost the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

Users on the platform place bets on a candidate by buying “Yes” shares and bet against a candidate by buying “No” shares.

In just one week, the poll, which began on June 2, has generated $28,677 in transaction volume.

According to Polymarket, the survey will conclude on January 16, 2027, the day of the presidential election.

Meanwhile, TheCable observed that every political or social question on the platform has a defined outcome, with shares trading between $0 and $1 depending on expectations.

In addition, a share settles at $1 if the predicted event occurs, but it becomes worthless if the event does not happen.

The platform operates on the Polygon blockchain and uses only the USDC (USD Coin) stablecoin for all trades and payouts.
