Headies organisers explain why 18th edition will be held in Canada

The organisers of the Headies Awards have announced that the ceremony will once again be hosted outside Nigeria, with Canada selected as the venue for the 18th edition.

The Headies awards had previously moved abroad in 2022 for its 15th edition, which was held in Atlanta, before returning to Lagos for the 17th edition in 2025.

Speaking on Monday at “The Big Announcement” event held at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos, Headies founder Ayo Animashaun explained that the decision to host the 18th edition in Toronto, Canada, was driven largely by economic considerations.

He added that while the main event will take place in Toronto, there will also be a simultaneous watch party in Lagos, allowing Nigerian fans to participate and follow key moments of the ceremony in real time.

Animashaun said, “Someone said Ayo, you are taking the Headies out of the country again, he said it doesn’t make sense. Tell me what makes sense. Does it make sense for us not to do it anymore?

“So how do we fund it? We will have a watch party in Lagos.”
