‘You Criticise Tinubu but Use His Roads’ — Wike Fires at Opposition

On Friday, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike said opposition leaders now use highways constructed under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, despite neglecting similar infrastructure projects while they held public office.

Wike made the remarks during the commissioning of the Mabushi–Ahmadu Bello Way Link Roads in Abuja as part of activities marking President Tinubu’s third anniversary in office.

The minister recalled how Tinubu directed that every district in Abuja must feel the impact of his administration.

Wike said: “Your directive is that every district in Abuja must be touched. Every district must see the impact of your administration.

“I have told everybody that road is the bedrock of any development.”

He added that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would commission more roads in satellite towns after inaugurating the Jahi–Gwarinpa Interchange on Thursday as part of the ongoing 31-day project commissioning exercise.

Wike also said the newly constructed roads had attracted housing developments and increased property values in the affected communities, demonstrating that road infrastructure remains the foundation of development.

“Road is the bedrock of any development. Look at this road. Look at the houses. But for this road, these houses would not have come up.”

Addressing opposition leaders, Wike argued that some politicians who previously held key public offices failed to construct critical roads but now benefit from infrastructure projects executed by the current administration.

He also vowed to compile the names of opposition leaders based in Abuja and personally show them the roads the Tinubu administration has constructed.

Only critics of Nyesom Wike would ignore his impact

Meanwhile, president of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has applauded the minister, adding that only his critics would fail to acknowledge the impact of his work in the FCT.

Akpabio, who spoke during the commissioning of the interchange at Arterial Road N16 – Ring Road III Intersection linking Jahi District to Gwarimpa District in the Federal Capital Territory, described Wike as a “performing minister” and a “game changer.”

The project is one of several being commissioned to mark the third anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

BACKSTORY…

The comment by Godswill Akpabio comes amid growing political attention on the performance of Nyesom Wike since his appointment by President Bola Tinubu in 2023.

Since taking office, Wike has embarked on several road and infrastructure projects across the Federal Capital Territory, drawing both praise from supporters and criticism from opponents over his style of governance and political influence.

Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, has remained one of the most visible and controversial figures in Tinubu’s administration, especially given his continued influence in national politics and his role in the internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party.
