The Zamfara State Government has announced that approximately 300 suspected terrorists were killed during a large-scale security operation conducted in Gummi Local Government Area.
The disclosure was made in a statement released by the State Commissioner for Information, Mahmud Dantawasa.
According to the commissioner, the operation, which took place on July 9, 2026, represents a major success in the ongoing fight against terrorism, banditry and other violent crimes disrupting peace, security and economic activities in Zamfara State and across the North-West.
Dantawasa said Governor Dauda Lawal praised the courage, professionalism and dedication of the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies that participated in the operation, describing their efforts as a source of renewed hope for residents.
He noted that the governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies through the provision of logistics, intelligence collaboration and other lawful interventions aimed at restoring lasting peace and stability across the state.
The commissioner further assured residents that the government remains focused on safeguarding lives and property in line with the administration’s Rescue Mission Agenda.
He added that the state government has encouraged security agencies to sustain the ongoing military offensive against terrorists and bandits until all parts of Zamfara are rid of criminal elements.
BACKSTORY:
Zamfara State has remained one of the states worst affected by banditry and insurgent activities in Nigeria’s North-West, with communities frequently experiencing attacks, kidnappings for ransom and cattle rustling. The persistent insecurity has displaced thousands of residents, disrupted farming and other economic activities, and prompted repeated military offensives aimed at dismantling criminal hideouts.
In recent months, security agencies have intensified coordinated air and ground operations across several local government areas in Zamfara as part of efforts to weaken armed groups operating in the state. The latest operation in Gummi is among the most significant in the ongoing campaign to restore peace and improve security in the region.
