The Wike-Fubara rift took another turn as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike stated that Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara has corrected his mistakes by returning to the political family that made him governor.
Wike made the statement on Tuesday while inspecting ongoing road construction in Abuja alongside senior officials from the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).
The minister was responding to Fubara’s pledge of support for the Rainbow Coalition during the launch of the Rivers Medical Industries Project in Port Harcourt on July 22, the latest development in the Wike-Fubara rift.
At the ceremony, the governor also endorsed Kingsley Chinda, Wike’s ally and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, as his chosen successor.
Responding to the development, Wike stated that politicians should not view politics through the lens of personal grievances, adding that leaders can freely acknowledge mistakes and embrace reconciliation.
Wike “I don’t know what you mean by sin. In politics, there is no sin. If someone realises they made a mistake and decides to correct it, there is nothing wrong with that.”
“Politics is not a sin. What matters is recognising that you were on the wrong path and making the right decision.”
The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, said he expected Siminalayi Fubara to return, arguing that the governor had no credible political alternative outside the platform that brought him to prominence.
“I said during my last media chat that he had no other choice but to return to the same political family that produced him,” he said.
“I have now been informed that he has made that declaration publicly, and we welcome him. Our doors are open. Everyone is welcome for us to work together. There is no better alternative. We will all work together to move the state forward.”
Backstory…
A long-running political dispute between Wike and Fubara split the Rivers political scene, driving lawmakers loyal to the FCT minister to launch impeachment proceedings against the governor before all sides reached an agreement.
Following the reconciliation, Fubara withdrew from the APC governorship primary race after panel members screened him alongside Chinda.
The governor stated that he stepped aside out of conviction and to promote peace, unity, and political stability in Rivers State.
His withdrawal came shortly after reports indicated that the APC screening committee cleared aspirants aligned with Wike for the Rivers House of Assembly primaries while disqualifying several of Fubara’s allies.
