Bolaji Abdullahi, the National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, has stated that the party does not require a coalition to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general poll.
In an appearance with Politics Today on Channels Television on Friday, Abdullahi made the claim.
According to him, the party was certain that Atiku Abubakar, its presidential candidate, could unseat Tinubu without the help of an alliance of opposition parties.
“We are going to win. We don’t need a coalition to win this election. The African Democratic Congress does not need a coalition to win this election,” Abdullahi said.
Speaking further, he stated that while a broad-based coalition could make the party’s task easier, it was not necessary for victory.
“If we are able to build the kind of coalition that we started to build, maybe to make our job easier, but we don’t need that coalition. We don’t necessarily need the coalition to win the election,” he said.
According to him, the ADC expects voters “from Abia to Zamfara” to support the party, arguing that some Nigerians would change their voting preferences because of their experiences under the Tinubu administration.
When asked if Atiku Abubakar could defeat Tinubu single-handedly in the 2027 general poll, Abdullahi said, “I believe so, and that’s our thinking, and that’s what we are working on.”

The remarks came against the backdrop of an ambitious opposition realignment that began in 2025 but ultimately failed to achieve its objective.
Opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola initially joined forces and adopted the relatively low-profile African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their common platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the APC in 2027.
The alliance publicly unveiled its leadership, with Rauf Aregbesola as national secretary and David Mark as interim national chairman.
However, internal disagreements later weakened the coalition. Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso subsequently left the ADC and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, where both are seeking the presidency.
