2027 General Election

2027: Tinubu too Desperate To Remain In Power, US Firm

Amid preparations to the 2027 general election, an American advocacy firm, has accused President Bola Tinubu of being too desperate to remain in office.

The firm made the accusation in a statement published on its verified X handle on Thursday.

Nigeria is preparing for the 2027 general elections.

Von Batten-Montague-York also accused the President of manipulating the 2027 elections by weaponising the police, courts and electoral institutions.

The firm made the allegations in response to reports that five men in Borno State were arrested for allegedly wearing “Tinubu Must Go” T-shirts.

The company stressed the importance of US support for Nigerians in their efforts to protect democracy and the rule of law.

“Nigerian President Bola Tinubu is desperate to remain in power for many self-beneficial reasons, including something called head-of-state immunity, a doctrine that can protect sitting heads of state from the jurisdiction of foreign courts while they remain in office.

“Tinubu is now fully aware that the only thing standing in the way of a possible official re-examination of his alleged role in the trafficking of heroin from Nigeria into the United States during the 1980s and 1990s, and a possible new criminal indictment, is his current status as President of Nigeria,” the firm tweeted.

Backstory…

The latest allegation by US-based advocacy firm Von Batten-Montague-York is part of a series of increasingly direct statements it has made about President Bola Tinubu and Nigeria’s 2027 elections.

The firm had already accused Tinubu’s administration of seeking to manipulate the 2027 general election, saying on September 24 that the United States should not allow the Nigerian government to rig the election. It also called for greater attention to the independence of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

The organization’s recent declaration came amid public debate over the detention of five individuals in Borno State seen wearing “Tinubu Must Go” apparel.

However, the Borno State Police Command denied claims that the men were targeted merely for displaying political opposition.
