The Federal Government has revealed plans to launch a monthly cash support program providing N50,000 to targeted vulnerable households.
The funds aim to cushion the financial burden imposed by rising living costs.
Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro, announced the initiative in a statement on Friday.
Doro explained that the presidential initiative, named the National Emergency Relief and Stabilization Intervention (NERSI), seeks to provide immediate financial relief to millions of low-income Nigerians.
“Under this intervention, eligible beneficiaries will receive N50,000 monthly, providing direct assistance to help meet essential needs and ease the burden of living costs,” he said.
Linking the intervention to persistent food inflation, the administration framed the scheme as a key component of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to the ministry, payment service providers will send text messages to verify recipients’ consent before disbursing funds directly to their bank accounts or mobile wallets.
The minister warned that the scheme requires no applications, fees, or agent registration.
He cautioned the public against potential fraud, advising individuals never to disclose their PINs or Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) to anyone.
The ministry affirmed its commitment to managing the intervention transparently and accountably.
Backstory…
In October 2023, Tinubu launched the Renewed Hope conditional cash support program, promising ₦25,000 monthly for three months to 15 million vulnerable households, representing approximately 62 million Nigerians. The programme was presented as an immediate response to the economic hardship caused by subsidy removal and other economic reforms.

The implementation of that cash support program, however, faced delays and questions about how many intended beneficiaries actually received the money.
By December 2023, World Bank figures indicated that only about 1.5 million households had received payments, far below the 15 million households targeted.
In February 2024, the government announced the resumption of the transfers, this time describing the intervention as support for 12 million vulnerable households, with each beneficiary expected to receive ₦25,000 monthly for three months.
The latest announcement comes alongside another intervention for workers. On October 27, 2026, the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress agreed on a ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance for six months, beginning in November, following negotiations over workers’ welfare and the rising cost of living.
