The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported two suspected Ebola cases in the northeast.
In a Saturday update on its official X account, the agency revealed that health officials isolated both individuals while completing contact identification and tracing.
The NCDC added that laboratory testing is currently underway to verify the diagnosis.
“Two suspected cases of Ebola disease have been identified in Nigeria’s North-East region. Both individuals have been isolated, contact identification and listing is ongoing, and laboratory testing is being conducted.
“Being classified as suspected cases does not mean they are confirmed Ebola cases; confirmation is subject to laboratory results,” the statement read.
The NCDC emphasized that positive laboratory results remain required for confirmation, warning that labeling individuals as suspected cases does not mean they have tested positive for Ebola.
The agency advised Nigerians to follow public health guidelines, practice proper sanitation, and maintain strict hand hygiene.
Officials pledged to provide further updates once confirmed information becomes available.
This announcement follows the Federal Government’s October 20, 2026 confirmation of Nigeria’s first imported Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
According to Health and Social Welfare Minister Prof. Ali Pate, the infected woman arrived in Nigeria from Uganda on October 7 and began showing symptoms the same day, later seeking treatment at a private Abuja hospital on October 11.
Following confirmation, health authorities initially identified and tracked 44 contacts—including patients, caregivers, healthcare workers, and travel companions—before expanding monitoring to 53 contacts.
Backstory…
The development comes less than two weeks after the govt confirmed the first case Ebola case in FCT, making the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) present in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The case was laboratory-confirmed after a woman, who recently returned to Nigeria from Uganda, was admitted to a private medical facility in the FCT.
The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, disclosed the development in an official statement released on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
