Factional National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has advised the leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to be cautious about granting excessive influence to former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and his supporters within the party.
In a statement released on June 8, 2026, Abure made the comments while responding to reports of disagreements over how elective positions are being shared within the NDC.
He said the decision by the NDC leadership, headed by Senator Seriake Dickson, not to allocate all requested positions to Obi’s supporters was justified, citing lessons from the Labour Party’s experience during and after the 2023 general elections.
According to him, several individuals who secured political offices under the Labour Party platform later opposed the party leadership instead of strengthening it.
“They say history usually repeats itself. Senator Dickson and Co have seen their trajectory and learnt from what happened to us,” Abure said.
He claimed that many beneficiaries of the Labour Party ticket eventually aligned with Peter Obi in internal disputes over party control.
Abure also said the party made major concessions ahead of the 2023 elections by accommodating Obi and his supporters, including giving out tickets to many of them.
“We only looked at his body language and obliged most of his supporters with tickets. Most of the tickets were given for free because we believed we were investing in those persons,” he stated.
He further alleged that some elected officials later supported moves against the party leadership after winning elections on its platform.
“All those elected under the party, Obi took them to fight the leadership of the party,” he said.
