Abuja Light Rail Rehab Costs N10bn, Says Wike.
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has disclosed that the Abuja Light Rail rehabilitation project has cost $15 million, equivalent to over N10 billion. This announcement came during his inspection of the project on Monday in Abuja. Wike also revealed that the light rail is now ready for commercial operations.
Project Completion and Presidential Mandate
Wike expressed his satisfaction at meeting the mandate given by President Bola Tinubu. He stated that he was excited to present a rehabilitated metro station to the President and assured residents that the light rail, also known as the Abuja Metro Line, would be inaugurated by President Tinubu on May 27 for commercial use.
“Thank God Almighty that we are good to go. We are ready, and you can see the facilities have been installed,” Wike said. “We are happy; very very happy, and we thank God the promise President Tinubu made has been kept.”
Commitment to Tinubu’s Agenda
Wike highlighted that President Tinubu had promised to deliver the metro line within his first year in office, and as a dedicated “foot soldier,” he ensured the promise became a reality. The operationalization of the metro line, he noted, is a testament to Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.
“We are doing well because Mr President has given us every necessary support,” Wike added. “Assuming we are not getting support from him, this would not have been a reality today.”
Design Omissions and Future Improvements
However, Wike pointed out some design omissions, such as the lack of air conditioning in the passenger waiting rooms and the absence of elevators at certain stations. He acknowledged these issues but assured that they would not prevent the metro line from operating fully.
“We are happy with the project. It is just that we identify one or two things that were omitted during the design,” he said. “But we believe that during the full operation of the train, some of the things will be taken into consideration.”
Enhancing Passenger Comfort
Wike emphasized that air conditioners and elevators would be essential for passenger comfort, especially for the elderly and those with mobility issues. He assured that these improvements would be considered in future upgrades.
Access Roads to Train Stations
In addition to the rail facilities, access roads have been constructed to link surrounding communities to the train stations. Wike highlighted the importance of these roads, stating that without them, the metro line would be less accessible to residents.
Economic Impact and Community Benefits
The successful rehabilitation and operationalization of the Abuja Light Rail are expected to have significant economic impacts, improving connectivity and easing transportation within the FCT. This development marks a major step forward in enhancing the infrastructure and transportation network in Abuja, promising greater convenience and efficiency for its residents.
