There will be a 24-hour protest in Lagos on May 1, 2025, as Bolt, Uber, InDrive, Rida, and other taxi-hailing drivers stage a peaceful protest against poor working conditions and anti-labor practices.

The protest is supported by the Lagos chapter of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), who stated that the drivers would boycott the apps on International Workers’ Day to demand fair compensation, safer working conditions, and respect for the drivers rights.

Steven Iwindoye, the union’s public relations officer, announced this in a statement issued to the media on Tuesday.

There are so many issues this protest stands to correct, such as poor wages, sudden and unjust deactivations, insecurity, and unsafe working environments.

“The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), Lagos State Chapter, is planning a 24-hour protest on May Day over alleged anti-labor practices by app-based companies, including Uber and Bolt.

“In a statement signed by AUATON Public Relations Officer Steven Iwindoye on Tuesday, the union said members would be staying off the apps, refusing to work, and demanding that their rights be respected.

“According to Iwindoye, the union is protesting against alleged poor wages, unjust deactivations, insecurity, and unsafe working conditions. Others are excessive commissions taken by app companies, lack of proper rider profiles, mandatory facial recognition systems, and harmful and exploitative work policies.”

This planned protest will certainly cause transportation disruptions on May 1st if it’s carried out. A lot of taxi hailing users will certainly face difficulties in getting cabs to take them to their destination.
