Grid collapse: TCN MD says, “Our equipment is outdated.”

Nigeria’s electrical equipment has serious issues, according to Sule Abdulaziz, the head of the Transmission Company of Nigeria. “A lot of the equipment is very old,” he explains.
Nevertheless, he believes that within five years, Nigeria may have consistent electricity everywhere. Abdulaziz discussed this on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics program. He described the reasons behind the electricity grid’s frequent failures there.
“The majority of the equipment we use is 50 or 40 years [old], and the transmission system requires a lot of investment. This sector has been neglected in this country for a long time.” Therefore, those infrastructures cannot function flawlessly.

Abdulaziz says they will install a backup system to prevent power outages in the future. If the primary power system fails, this will lessen the likelihood of severe blackouts. We are currently working on the World Bank-funded scatter system for the entire network, and we have accomplished 70% of the project so far. The project is expected to be finished in two years.

We celebrated the project with the World Bank at Gwagwalada in Abuja over a month ago. Seventy percent of it is finished. The frequency of system disruptions will decrease once we have the scatter system.
He stated, “We are working to upgrade all of our transmission lines.” They’re laboring because the government might not have enough funds for this.

In order to obtain that consent, the honorable minister is currently collaborating with the presidency. We refer to this as the “super grid.”
“With the type of grid we have now, once we have a problem with the line, you have no other line to switch on to,” he added. “Even if there is a fault in one transmission line by the time we have it, you can switch to the one so that we have an alternative.”
