Outrage! 50% Telecom Hike Gets NATCOMS’ Backing
The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC was pressured into suspending its planned Tuesday nationwide protest against the 50 percent telecommunications tariff increase.
The National Association of Telecoms Subscribers lent its support to the position taken by the organized Labour.
Naija Eyes learned that the NLC signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal Government after a meeting with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Monday night.
The MoU signed by SGF Senator George Akume, NLC President Joe Ajaero, and Minister of Labour and Employment Muhammadu Dingyadi, along with the National Secretary of the NLC, Emmanuel Ugboaja, had both parties agreeing to set up a technical committee to resolve grey areas on the 50 percent telecom tariff approval.
The NLC, however, stood on its rejection of the tariff hike.
Generally, the resolutions emanating from the meeting convened by the Federal Government of Nigeria on the proposal of a 50% hike in telecommunications tariffs in the country, which the Nigeria Labour Congress strongly opposed due to foreseen consequences on Nigerian workers and the economy-may be a justification for a one-day nationwide mass protest-include the need for the parties to sit together in a technical group to resolve most of the thorny areas raised during the discussion; hence, a 10-man joint committee was set up of five (5) representatives each from the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC); this committee shall conclude and submit its deliberation within two (2) weeks from this 3rd day of February, 2025.
The parties call on the Nigerian people to remain calm while this committee concludes its assignment,” the communique after the meeting appraised.
This is coming after the Nigerian Communications Commission approved a 50 percent telecommunications tariff hike for operators on January 2025.
The approval has stirred the tariff hike controversy in the telecom sector of Nigeria.
NLC and other telecom subscribers had opposed the implementation of the tariff, citing the persistent economic hardship Nigerians were already facing.
