Man sentenced to 15 years for falling asleep next to his rape victim.
A 19-year-old man, Tshepo Lethebe, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Free State High Court sitting in Sasolburg after being convicted of raping a 21-year-old physically challenged woman in 2021. The incident occurred on February 7, 2021, when Lethebe forcefully entered the victim’s home, located in the Free State province of South Africa, and dragged her to his residence without uttering a word. There, he sexually assaulted her before falling asleep beside her.
Despite her physical challenges, the courageous victim managed to dress herself and seek help while her assailant was still asleep. Her prompt action led to the swift arrest of Lethebe by Sgt. Sara Maleka from the Mafube Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit. Lethebe was apprehended the same day and remained in custody throughout the trial.
The diligent efforts of Sgt. Maleka, along with the prosecutorial work of prosecutor Mthetwa, were instrumental in ensuring Lethebe’s conviction. Sgt. Sinah Mpakane, a police spokesperson, praised their work, highlighting that the 15-year sentence sends a clear message that the justice system will not tolerate the abuse of women and children. This case underscores the seriousness with which such offenses are treated, particularly against vulnerable individuals, and reinforces the commitment of law enforcement to protect and seek justice for victims of sexual violence.
