FCT development must go beyond Asokoro and Maitama — Bola Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has praised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for extending development beyond Abuja’s elite districts, saying his projects have shown that progress should benefit all Nigerians.

Tinubu made the remark during the commissioning of the Phase 1 section of the Kuje-Gwagwalada Dual Carriageway, a 7-kilometre road project flagged off as part of activities marking his third anniversary in office.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the president recalled instructing Wike at the start of his appointment to ensure Abuja’s development reached all communities and not just affluent areas like Maitama and Asokoro.

He noted that the newly completed road would help unlock the agricultural potential of the area and improve economic activities.

Tinubu said the road, which had long been a challenge for residents, traders, farmers, and students, would now improve security, ease transportation, and boost commerce across Kuje, Gwagwalada, and Kwali.

He described the project as a key economic link connecting Abuja to surrounding area councils and creating an alternative route to southern Nigeria.

According to him, the construction has also opened up residential areas and made movement safer for residents, especially women, students, and workers.

Commending Wike, Tinubu said the minister had responded to the needs of satellite communities and demonstrated leadership by bringing development closer to the grassroots.

Since his appointment, Wike has focused on expanding development beyond Abuja’s highbrow districts like Maitama and Asokoro to satellite towns and underserved communities such as Kuje, Gwagwalada, and Kwali.

This shift has been part of President Bola Tinubu’s broader agenda to ensure infrastructure and public services reach all parts of the Federal Capital Territory, not just elite neighbourhoods.

The commissioning of the Kuje-Gwagwalada road highlights this renewed focus on improving connectivity, boosting agriculture, and opening up economic opportunities in the outskirts of Abuja.
