Federal University Wukari bans T-shirt signing, dancing, processions over graduation celebrations

The management of Federal University Wukari has announced an immediate and total ban on all student sign-out activities over safety and security concerns linked to such celebrations.

The directive was contained in a circular issued by the institution’s Academic Affairs Division and signed by the Academic Secretary, Micah Sylvanus, on behalf of the registrar.

According to the circular, the decision was approved by the university Senate during its 76th regular meeting held on May 26, 2026.

The ban covers all activities commonly associated with sign-out ceremonies, including signing on T-shirts, dancing, classroom processions, and student gatherings both within and outside the campus.

The university also prohibited celebrations around its gates and along the Katsina-Ala–Jalingo Highway, citing traffic congestion and security risks to students and the public.

In addition, students and associations have been barred from organising convoys, public processions, or spraying money during graduation and passing-out celebrations.

The institution said its security personnel have been directed to enforce the new policy strictly and report any violations for disciplinary action.

While reaffirming its commitment to student safety and welfare, the management urged all students to comply fully with the directive, which takes immediate effect.

BACKSTORY…

The decision by Federal University Wukari follows growing concerns over safety and security linked to student sign-out celebrations, which have become common in many Nigerian universities.

In recent years, such celebrations have often involved large gatherings, road processions, dancing, and spraying of money, sometimes leading to traffic disruptions, accidents, and clashes around campuses.

University authorities say the ban is aimed at preventing disorder and protecting students, staff, and the public, especially around busy routes like the Katsina-Ala–Jalingo Highway.

The move reflects a wider trend among tertiary institutions in Nigeria tightening rules around graduation-related activities to improve campus safety and maintain order.
