The Nigerian House Representative has strongly denounced the narrative by the US Senate that portrays Nigeria’s security crisis as ‘genocide against Christians’ or state-sponsored persecution.

The US Senate’s story was vehemently disputed in a motion introduced by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and endorsed by every member of the House of Representatives.

The lawmakers described the claims as misleading, baseless, and a misrepresentation of Nigeria’s security challenges.

Kalu stated that there was no proof of state-sponsored persecution of Christians in Nigeria, pointing out that both Muslims and Christians had been impacted by terrorist acts in the nation.

Kalu asked the international community and the US Congress to rely on verified information and refrain from taking any steps that would jeopardise Nigeria’s unity and counterterrorism initiatives.

The proposal urged key committees to collaborate with the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, DC, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and all necessary security agencies within 21 days in order to formally protest the bill’s sponsors against Nigeria.

According to Julius Ihonvbere, the House Leader, Nigeria has moved past religious concerns and genocides.

“The main problem here comes from those who deliberately demarket Nigeria outside the country, including Nigerians,” he said.

“There is an agenda designed to rubbish some of the progress we have made so far.”

This move by the house of reps comes only few days after president Tinubu on october 1 declared that there was no religious genocide in Nigeria.

In a statement he signed on Tuesday September 30 “No Religious Genocide In Nigeria, Says President Tinubu In Owerri,” Bayo Onanuga, Special Advisor to the President on Information and Strategy, made this revelation.
