Super-sub Zirkzee’s dream debut secures Ten Hag’s winning start for Man Utd vs Fulham.

Manchester United kicked off their season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Fulham at Old Trafford, marking a positive start for Erik ten Hag’s side. The match was tightly contested, with both teams cautious in their approach, but United consistently looked more dangerous in attack. Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes were particularly active, creating several opportunities, though neither team could find the back of the net in the first half.

As the game progressed, it seemed increasingly likely that United would break the deadlock. Ten Hag made a decisive substitution on the hour mark, bringing on summer signing Joshua Zirkzee for his debut. The 23-year-old Dutch forward made an immediate impact, converting a cross from Garnacho in the 87th minute to score the only goal of the match.

Zirkzee’s debut goal secured all three points for United, giving them a strong start to the season. The win sets them up well for their next fixture against Brighton at the Amex Stadium, leaving the team and fans satisfied with their opening performance.

Man sentenced to 15 years for falling asleep next to his rape victim.

A 19-year-old man, Tshepo Lethebe, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Free State High Court sitting in Sasolburg after being convicted of raping a 21-year-old physically challenged woman in 2021. The incident occurred on February 7, 2021, when Lethebe forcefully entered the victim’s home, located in the Free State province of South Africa, and dragged her to his residence without uttering a word. There, he sexually assaulted her before falling asleep beside her.

Despite her physical challenges, the courageous victim managed to dress herself and seek help while her assailant was still asleep. Her prompt action led to the swift arrest of Lethebe by Sgt. Sara Maleka from the Mafube Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit. Lethebe was apprehended the same day and remained in custody throughout the trial.

The diligent efforts of Sgt. Maleka, along with the prosecutorial work of prosecutor Mthetwa, were instrumental in ensuring Lethebe’s conviction. Sgt. Sinah Mpakane, a police spokesperson, praised their work, highlighting that the 15-year sentence sends a clear message that the justice system will not tolerate the abuse of women and children. This case underscores the seriousness with which such offenses are treated, particularly against vulnerable individuals, and reinforces the commitment of law enforcement to protect and seek justice for victims of sexual violence.

EFCC denies allegations that Yahoo Boys hacked its account.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) responded to the disappearance of its X (formerly Twitter) account after rumors surfaced that Yahoo Boys might have hacked it. The account, which had 2.2 million followers, became inaccessible on August 14, leading to speculation.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed that the handle @officialEFCC had been down for three days but attributed this to a network issue rather than a cyberattack. He reassured that the EFCC’s ICT department was working on restoring the account. Despite online rumors and threats from fraudsters on platforms like Reddit, Oyewale clarified that the account was not hacked but was temporarily down due to an ongoing system upgrade aimed at improving public service.

Meanwhile, the EFCC’s website and other social media platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram, remain functional. The agency has emphasized that the issue is purely technical and unrelated to any cyber warfare.

Nigeria Seeks $500M in Tax-Free Bonds for Investment Boost.

Nigeria Seeks $500M in Tax-Free Bonds for Investment Boost.

Nigeria is set to raise $500 million through a new tax-exempt bond aimed at attracting both domestic and international investors to bolster infrastructure and critical sectors. Announced by the Debt Management Office (DMO), this bond will offer a minimum investment of $10,000, with additional increments of $1,000, broadening accessibility for investors in Nigeria and abroad.

Finance Minister Wale Edun emphasized that the bond is part of a strategic effort to drive economic growth and enhance foreign currency reserves. Scheduled for issuance on August 19, 2024, it is expected to help stabilize the naira, manage inflation, and lower interest rates by improving foreign exchange liquidity and boosting reserves. The bond is a shift from Nigeria’s initial plan to issue a Eurobond this year, reflecting a focus on domestic market engagement and funding the budget deficit.

The bond will be listed on the Nigerian Exchange and FMDQ, allowing diverse investment participation. It will be repaid after five years with semi-annual interest payments, aiming to inspire investor confidence through its structured and secure framework. This move aligns with Nigeria’s broader strategy to mobilize both local and international capital to support economic development and address budgetary needs.

N344.85bn for National Assembly Could Cover 27 Federal University Budget.

The National Assembly’s 2024 budget of N344.85 billion has raised significant concerns due to its size, surpassing the annual budgets of 20 Nigerian states and potentially funding over 27 federal universities. This budget is seen as extravagant, especially given the economic hardships faced by millions of Nigerians.

Key Details:

  • Funding Capacity: The N344.85 billion could cover the combined budgets of universities like the University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, and University of Ilorin, among others.
  • Senator’s Running Costs: Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila revealed that each senator receives N21 million monthly for running costs, contrary to official figures from the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), which states senators earn about N1.06 million monthly.
  • Criticism and Calls for Reform: The National Assembly’s spending has faced criticism, with calls for a reduction in its budget and a leaner legislative body. Historical data shows similar concerns, with past claims about the National Assembly consuming a large portion of the national budget.

This allocation reflects ongoing debates about the appropriateness of legislative spending amid broader economic challenges and calls for increased transparency and accountability in governance.

Nigeria’s inflation rate drops, but northern states continue to face severe economic challenges.

Nigeria’s inflation rate drops, but northern states continue to face severe economic challenges.

In July 2024, Nigeria’s headline inflation rate eased to 33.40% for the first time in nearly two years. However, the relief is uneven, with northern states experiencing significantly higher inflation rates. Bauchi recorded the highest rate at 46.04%, while Benue saw the lowest at 27.28%.

Month-on-month, inflation was highest in Abuja (3.91%), Borno (3.84%), and Enugu (3.76%). The northern region, grappling with food insecurity and economic instability due to ongoing banditry and kidnappings, faces severe inflation impacts. Farmers in the North are particularly affected as insecurity drives up food prices and hampers agricultural productivity.

This economic strain, coupled with the security crisis, exacerbates the region’s vulnerability, contributing to Nigeria’s overall fragile economic and security situation. The impact of rising costs and insecurity is reflected in the broader food insecurity affecting the country, especially in the North.

Many retirees are struggling due to the Federal Government’s failure to pay pensions. As of May 2024, the FG owes an estimated N250 billion in accrued pension rights. Retirees like Yomi Gbadamosi and Mabel Adarabioyo, who have waited years for their pensions, face severe hardships. The delays stem from the FG’s inability to settle accrued rights, which has led to severe financial distress among retirees. The government has recently begun efforts to address these issues, but delays persist, with the 2024 pension allocation reduced by 21.3%

Seizure of Presidential Jets: FG Must Explain to Nigerians – Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate in the 2023 elections, has called on the Federal Government to provide an explanation regarding the recent seizure of Nigeria’s Presidential Jets in France. Obi described the incident as an international embarrassment, highlighting it as a reflection of failed leadership and a disregard for the rule of law in Nigeria.

In a series of tweets, Obi criticized the secrecy surrounding the acquisition and management of the Presidential fleet, emphasizing that these assets belong to the Nigerian people and should be handled with transparency. He questioned the rationale behind purchasing a Presidential jet at a time when the country is grappling with severe economic hardship, noting that the government’s actions demonstrate insensitivity to the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.

Obi also raised concerns about the lack of transparency in government dealings, pointing out that Nigerians were unaware of the transactions involving the jets until the French court’s ruling. He called for the Federal Government to clarify how the country ended up in this situation, particularly in light of previous legal issues involving Nigerian assets abroad.

In conclusion, Obi urged the government to be more accountable and transparent in its dealings, especially when managing assets that belong to the people. He also questioned the role of the Ogun State government and the Federal Government in addressing the legal challenges that led to the seizure of the jets.

APC: Rivers Court Judgment Not Binding.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has asserted that it is not obligated to comply with the Rivers High Court ruling that reinstated the dissolved Emeke Beke-led State Executive Committee. APC Deputy National Secretary, Festus Fuanter, clarified that the party was not a party to the suit and thus not bound by the judgment. He also pointed out that the Beke-led executive had already been removed by another court and was appealing that decision. Fuanter emphasized that court judgments do not bind individuals or organizations that were not directly involved in the lawsuit.

Furthermore, the APC reiterated its recognition of the Tony Okocha-led Caretaker Committee as the legitimate body overseeing the party’s affairs in Rivers State. The NWC (National Working Committee) of the APC has planned a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting for September 12, subject to President Bola Tinubu’s approval, with a caucus meeting set for September 11 to discuss party issues.

Crackdown Success: NNPC Confiscates 63 Illegal Refineries.

In a decisive move against oil theft, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has confiscated 63 illegal refineries in just one week, from August 3 to 9. This crackdown is part of a broader effort to combat rampant oil theft that has plagued Nigeria’s oil industry.

Key Points:

  1. Seizures and Discoveries: NNPC’s operations led to the seizure of 63 illegal refineries across Bayelsa, Rivers, Abia, Imo, and Delta States. Additionally, 19 illegal pipeline connections were recovered, and a vandalized oil wellhead was discovered in Bayelsa State. Stolen crude was also found in oil reservoirs in Rivers State.
  2. Incident Reporting: During this period, a total of 177 incidents were reported. Tantita Security Services recorded four cases, Shell Petroleum Development Company reported eleven, Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited had twenty-six, and Maton Engineering Company reported twenty. The NNPC Command and Control Centre reported fifty-one incidents, with government security agencies accounting for sixty-four.
  3. Vehicle and Equipment Seizures: The operation also led to the arrest of seventeen individuals in Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom States. Additionally, fifteen wooden boats transporting stolen crude were confiscated in Rivers and Bayelsa States.
  4. Impact on Oil Industry: Oil theft significantly impacts Nigeria’s oil sector, with previous estimates showing losses of up to 700,000 barrels per day in 2022. This theft contributes to divestment by international oil companies and hampers the country’s economic growth.
  5. Government and Security Efforts: The NNPC’s crackdown reflects ongoing efforts to curb the massive losses attributed to oil theft. The government and security agencies are under pressure to address this issue, as highlighted by recent comments from industry leaders like Tony Elumelu, who emphasized the need for accountability and transparency regarding oil theft.

This aggressive approach by the NNPC is crucial in addressing the severe economic and security implications of oil theft in Nigeria.

Father of Barcelona starlet Lamine Yamal reportedly stabbed in car park attack.

In a shocking turn of events, Mounir Nasraoui, the father of Barcelona’s rising star Lamine Yamal, has been seriously assaulted in a car park attack in Mataró, near Barcelona. Reports indicate that Nasraoui was rushed to Can Ruti Hospital in Badalona with serious injuries following the incident that occurred on Wednesday night.

This distressing news comes as Yamal, a 17-year-old winger of Moroccan heritage, has been gaining prominence in the football world. Yamal’s impressive performances at the European Championship, where he played a crucial role in Spain’s victory, have catapulted him into the spotlight. He was instrumental in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, contributing with a goal and four assists and earning the Young Player of the Tournament award.

The attack on Nasraoui adds a troubling dimension to Yamal’s recent success. As his father fights for recovery, the young footballer faces a difficult period, balancing his burgeoning career with the family crisis. Catalonia’s police force, Mossos d’Esquadra, is leading the investigation into the assault and is appealing for witnesses to help clarify the circumstances of the attack.

Ajunwa: My Olympic gold came with no help from Nigeria, thanks to Odegbami.

Chioma Ajunwa, a celebrated Nigerian track and field athlete, recently shared the challenges she faced in her journey to becoming the country’s first-ever Olympic gold medalist at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics. Despite her historic achievement in the women’s long jump with a remarkable 7.12m leap, Ajunwa revealed that she received minimal support from the Nigerian government or the country’s sports authorities during her preparation for the Games.

Ajunwa’s win was a groundbreaking moment for Nigeria, as it not only marked the nation’s first gold medal in athletics but also underscored the potential within the country’s athletes despite systemic challenges. However, her victory came with a personal struggle that highlighted the broader issues within Nigerian sports administration. According to Ajunwa, her preparation for the Olympics was primarily self-funded, and she relied heavily on the assistance of Green Eagles football legend Segun Odegbami, who played a pivotal role in securing the training she needed to compete on the world stage.

Reflecting on her journey, Ajunwa expressed that winning the gold medal was the pinnacle of her career, but it was achieved through sheer determination and personal effort rather than institutional support. She credited her success to her hard work and the intervention of Odegbami, who facilitated her training abroad, enabling her to reach her full potential.

Ajunwa’s revelations come amid ongoing concerns about the state of Nigerian sports, particularly in how athletes are supported and prepared for major international competitions. She emphasized that the lack of proper training and preparation is a significant barrier to Nigeria’s success in global sports events, such as the Olympics. Ajunwa criticized the athletics federation for its insufficient support and warned that unless the country starts investing in the long-term development of its athletes, it will continue to struggle on the international stage.

Her story is a poignant reminder that winning an Olympic medal requires years of dedicated preparation, not just a few months of training. Ajunwa’s achievements, despite the odds, serve as both an inspiration and a call to action for better support and infrastructure for Nigerian athletes.

Ajunwa’s insights shed light on the broader issues affecting Nigerian sports and underscore the need for systemic changes to ensure that future generations of athletes receive the support they need to succeed on the world stage.
