Meet Black Forest Labs, the startup behind Elon Musk’s wild AI image generator.

Elon Musk’s AI company, Grok, has introduced a new image-generation feature that mirrors the chatbot’s minimal safeguards, allowing users to create and share highly controversial and potentially misleading images directly on X, formerly Twitter. This capability was revealed when xAI, Musk’s AI venture, announced a partnership with a German startup called Black Forest Labs, which powers Grok’s image generator using its FLUX.1 model.

Black Forest Labs, a startup that emerged from stealth mode in August with $31 million in seed funding led by Andreessen Horowitz, is behind this powerful yet controversial tool. The startup’s co-founders, Robin Rombach, Patrick Esser, and Andreas Blattmann, previously contributed to Stability AI’s Stable Diffusion models, making them well-versed in AI-generated imagery. Unlike more established AI image generators like OpenAI’s DALL-E or Google’s Imagen, Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.1 model operates with fewer restrictions, aligning with Musk’s vision of an “anti-woke” AI.

The absence of strict guardrails on Grok’s image generator has already led to the proliferation of provocative and misleading content on X. Users have created and shared images that would typically be restricted on other platforms, such as a fictional image of Donald Trump smoking marijuana on Joe Rogan’s show or Pikachu holding an assault rifle. These images highlight the broader issue of misinformation and the ethical challenges of AI image generation.

The collaboration between Musk’s Grok and Black Forest Labs raises concerns about the spread of misinformation, particularly given the lack of watermarks or other identifiers on the AI-generated images. This could exacerbate the already problematic presence of deepfake content on X, as seen with the recent incident involving AI-generated explicit images of Taylor Swift that went viral on the platform.

Moreover, Musk’s apparent disregard for implementing safeguards on AI-generated content reflects his belief that such measures make AI less safe. He has previously expressed that training AI to be “woke,” or in his words, to “lie,” is dangerous. This philosophy seems to be at the core of Grok’s development and the decision to collaborate with Black Forest Labs.

The potential consequences of this approach became evident when five secretaries of state urged X to take action against misinformation regarding Vice President Kamala Harris, which included AI-generated content that falsely depicted her as admitting to being a “diversity hire.” This incident underscores the risks associated with allowing unregulated AI-generated content to flood social media platforms.

In summary, the partnership between Grok and Black Forest Labs has unleashed a new wave of AI-generated content that lacks the safeguards present in other platforms, potentially leading to a significant increase in misinformation on X. This move aligns with Musk’s broader vision for AI but also raises critical ethical questions about the role of AI in shaping public discourse.

FG freezes $37m in cryptocurrency linked to suspected #EndBadGovernance protest organizers.

The Federal Government has frozen over $37 million worth of cryptocurrency assets believed to be linked to the organizers of the recent #EndBadGovernance protests. This action was taken following an order issued by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja on August 9, 2024.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) filed an ex parte application on August 8, alleging that the assets in these cryptocurrency wallets were proceeds of money laundering and terrorism financing. The court order was granted without any opposition, as the hearing was conducted without the presence of the affected parties.

The largest wallet contained approximately $37 million in USDT cryptocurrency, while three other wallets held smaller amounts ranging from $90 to $443,512. Although the identities of the wallet owners were not disclosed in the court application, the Federal Government linked them to the suspected organizers of the #EndBadGovernance protests.

The affidavit supporting the EFCC’s application stated that the assets belonged to individuals under investigation for money laundering and terrorism financing. The court’s decision to freeze the assets was made to allow for the continuation and conclusion of these investigations.

The #EndBadGovernance protests, which took place across various parts of Nigeria from August 1 to 10, 2024, were driven by widespread discontent over rising living costs, economic hardships, and broader governance issues in the country. The government’s decision to freeze these assets has raised concerns about the implications for civil liberties and the financial rights of those involved in the protests.

Revenue Commission: Senators earn N1m monthly.

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) clarified that each of Nigeria’s 109 senators earns ₦1,063,860 in monthly salary and allowances. This statement was released to address claims made by former Senator Shehu Sani, who suggested that senators receive a ₦13.5 million monthly running cost in addition to a ₦750,000 salary.

RMAFC’s breakdown of a senator’s monthly earnings includes a basic salary of ₦168,866.70 and allowances such as ₦126,650 for vehicle maintenance, ₦42,216.66 for a personal assistant, and ₦422,166.66 for constituency allowance, among others.

The Commission explained that certain allowances are paid regularly with the salary, while others are non-regular and paid as due, such as a furniture allowance of ₦6,079,200 and severance gratuity of the same amount, which are given once per tenure. Additionally, a vehicle allowance of ₦8,105,600 is available as a loan, repayable before the senator leaves office.

RMAFC emphasized that, apart from the president, vice president, and heads of the National Assembly, public officials are no longer provided with housing.

This clarification came amid criticisms from former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who argued that lawmakers should not be allowed to set their salaries, a role he believes should belong to RMAFC. The Senate, however, refuted these claims, with Senate spokesman Yemi Adaramodu labeling the accusations as “uncharitable and satanic,” asserting that the National Assembly only receives what RMAFC allocates in accordance with the constitution.

Delta PDP Tells APC: You Lack Credibility to Discuss Debt Management.

The Delta State PDP criticized the APC, claiming they lack credibility to discuss debt management. The PDP accused the APC-led federal government of reckless borrowing, escalating the national debt from N7 trillion under PDP’s 16-year rule to over N90 trillion in eight years. The PDP defended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s efforts to reduce Delta’s debt by N180 billion and save over N205 billion, contrasting this with what they described as the APC’s mismanagement of the national economy.

Five-Point Manifesto Launched by Okpebholo

Five-Point Manifesto Launched by Okpebholo.

The political landscape of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State has gained momentum with the recent defection of Omosede Igbinedion, daughter of the Esama of Benin and former House of Representatives member, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. Her transition was marked by a rally at the Edo South senatorial district’s APC governorship campaign flag-off, where Senator Monday Okpebholo introduced his five-point manifesto focusing on security, infrastructure, education, agriculture, and water provision.

The rally, held at the University of Benin’s Ekheuan Campus, saw notable APC figures, including former governorship candidate Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and recent PDP returnee Charles Idahosa. Ize-Iyamu declared the end of PDP’s influence in the state, while Idahosa urged for a public debate between Okpebholo and PDP’s Asue Ighodalo to test their policies.

Emperor Jarrett Tenebe, Acting State Chairman of the APC, welcomed Igbinedion and emphasized the APC’s progress towards governance. Igbinedion, accompanied by her brothers Mike and Fred Igbinedion, cited APC’s support for her Ovia Agenda as a reason for her switch, highlighting the APC’s commitment to her vision by nominating Dennis Idahosa as the deputy governorship candidate.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole praised Igbinedion’s move as a significant gain for the APC, criticizing the PDP for allegedly mismanaging public resources and promising to restore and improve key projects if elected.

Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, reinstated by the court, urged the electorate not to fear the PDP and emphasized the APC’s commitment to defeating its rival. Dennis Idahosa framed the election as a contest between youthful innovation and outdated practices.

Paul Ohonbamu, former deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, described the election as a decisive moment for the state, while APC leader Odubu called for urgent action to secure the state’s future.

Slow Rollout of Innoson CNG Cars Sparks Complaints from Nigerians After Tinubu’s Launch.

President Bola Tinubu launched the first phase of locally produced CNG buses by Innoson Motors to address Nigeria’s transportation challenges and reduce reliance on petrol. However, the rollout has been slow, with only 20 buses presented so far. Conversion centers for petrol vehicles to CNG are limited, and the high conversion cost, ranging from N750,000 to N950,000, has deterred many private vehicle owners. While the initiative is seen as a positive step, there are concerns about its accessibility and the overall impact on easing transportation costs.

Analysts predict a decline in July’s inflation due to reduced fuel demand

Analysts predict a decline in July’s inflation due to reduced fuel demand.

Nigeria’s headline inflation, which reached 34.19% in June 2024, is expected to moderate in July due to several factors, according to analysts. The anticipation of a slight decrease is driven by the high base effect from the previous year, the federal government’s 150-day duty-free import policy on certain food items, and recent stability in the naira’s exchange rate.

Factors Contributing to Expected Inflation Moderation:

  1. High Base Effect:
    • In June/July 2023, inflation surged significantly due to the currency devaluation. This high base from last year means that even if prices continue to rise this year, the year-on-year inflation rate could appear lower. Tobi Ehinmosan, a macroeconomic analyst at FBNQuest Merchant Bank, highlights that this effect will likely cause a deceleration in July’s headline inflation.
  2. Duty-Free Import Policy:
    • The federal government’s recent approval of a 150-day duty-free window for the importation of key food items like maize, husked brown rice, and wheat is expected to have a positive impact on food inflation. This policy is part of broader efforts to combat rising food prices and stabilize the economy.
  3. Stability of the Naira:
    • Recent interventions by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have brought some stability to the naira. Analysts like Yemisi Adebayo of Coronation Merchant Bank note that this stability could help reduce inflationary pressures, particularly on imported goods, which have been a significant driver of price increases.

Current Market Observations:

  • Food Prices Decline:
    • Recent reports indicate that prices for certain food items, such as tomatoes, pepper, and garri, have started to decline in markets across Nigeria. This has provided some relief to consumers and is likely to contribute to the expected moderation in food inflation.
  • Economic Pressures Persist:
    • Despite these positive signs, inflationary pressures remain. Security issues, infrastructure deficits, high energy costs, and transportation challenges continue to affect the supply and distribution of goods, which may keep month-on-month inflation high. Additionally, the exchange rate’s depreciation in July has further complicated the economic landscape.

Expert Insights:

  • FBNQuest Capital Research expects a moderation in inflationary pressures largely due to the high base effect from last year. However, they caution that persistent economic challenges could slow the pace of improvement.
  • Commercio Partners analysts believe that recent government interventions, such as the N2 trillion package announced by the minister of agriculture, will help curb rising food prices and contribute to the stabilization of inflation.
  • Financial Derivatives Company (FDC), on the other hand, predicts that headline inflation could still rise to 34.26% in July, driven by ongoing supply chain disruptions, foreign exchange volatility, and increases in petrol prices.

Telecom Investments Decline Amid Negative Return on Capital

Telecommunication companies in Nigeria are facing a decline in investments due to negative returns on capital over the past 18 months. This financial strain, exacerbated by the naira’s sharp devaluation and rising inflation, has led to significant losses for major players like MTN Nigeria and Airtel Africa. The situation has caused concerns about deteriorating network quality and slower future investments, which could hinder the country’s digital infrastructure goals, including achieving 70% broadband penetration by 2025. Industry experts are calling for improved government policies and tariff adjustments to sustain the sector.

We used cutlasses and knives on her’- Domestic staff confess to k!lling their caterer boss hours after she made them a delicious meal.

The police in Ondo State have apprehended two domestic staff members involved in the gruesome murder of their employer, Olakunbi Adene, a well-known caterer in Akure. The suspects, who had been working for Adene, confessed to the crime after enjoying a meal she prepared for them following her 54th birthday celebration.

According to their statements, the suspects killed Adene after she generously treated them to a meal. They confessed that after eating, they attacked her with cutlasses and knives. During the attack, they gagged her, severed her head, and inflicted multiple other injuries, including cutting her wrists and legs and stabbing her body extensively. The crime scene was further tampered with; they attempted to stage a gas explosion by lighting the gas in the kitchen and covering the area with rubber clothes, hoping to destroy evidence and mislead investigators.

Their plan failed when the gas did not ignite as intended. They then stole Adene’s ATM cards and two Android phones, fleeing the scene. The police tracked the stolen phones to different locations, leading to their arrest.

The victim’s younger brother, Adebola Oyeneye, reported that he transported her body to the mortuary, revealing severe injuries. The victim’s husband, Dele Adene, confirmed that an autopsy would be conducted to ascertain the full extent of the injuries and find any remaining evidence, such as knives used in the attack.
