Videos and photos of the event triggered outcry on social media, with critics calling for an investigation and dissolution of the marriage.
Child marriage remains an issue in Ghana, with 19% of girls marrying before 18 and 5% before 15. Traditional leaders defend the marriage as part of their customs, stating that the girl’s role as the priest’s wife is tradition and did not interfere with her education. Government authorities have yet to respond to the controversy.
