Panic and outrage erupted among residents of Gboko in Benue State on Friday after the lifeless body of a newborn baby was discovered dumped along Rice Mill Road.
According to eyewitness accounts, the infant was found in the early hours of the day by passersby, a discovery that sparked shock, grief, and emotional reactions within the community.
Residents quickly gathered at the scene, expressing anger and deep sorrow over what they described as a “heartless and disturbing act.”
One resident, visibly distressed, lamented, “It is painful. How can someone do this to a newborn?” calling on authorities to urgently intervene.

The incident has reignited concerns over the growing cases of abandoned babies in different parts of the country, often linked to economic hardship, social stigma, and inadequate support systems.
Community members are now urging security agencies to launch a thorough investigation to identify those responsible and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
As of the time of this report, the Benue police and other relevant authorities were yet to release an official statement on the incident, and efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, were unsuccessful.
