2027 elections: President Tinubu says he expects more defections to APC
President Bola Tinubu revealed yesterday, that he anticipates more opposition party members joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) prior to the 2027 elections, as the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) have accepted him as the only candidate.
The governors’ and lawmakers’ endorsements show a strong internal APC consensus, thereby removing internal opposition to Tinubu’s reelection campaign.
The action also coincides with reports that opposition forces are uniting behind a new platform, potentially the African Democratic Congress(ADC), which is allegedly why the APC is attempting to strengthen unity as soon as possible.
Recall that a number of opposition political parties, including the Labour Party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party, and the Peoples Democratic Party, were struck by a wave of defections.
Delta State’s PDP structure, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, and his predecessor recently defected to the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.
Six members of the House of Representatives also declared their intention to switch to the APC, senator Kawu Sumaila and a few members of the House of Representatives defected from the NNPP to the ruling APC in Kano State among several other defections.
President Tinubu stated yesterday, in view of the 2027 elections that freedom of association and mobility is guaranteed by the Nigerian constitution.
Speaking at the APC’s National Summit, which was held in the Banquet Hall of the State House in Abuja and had as its topic “Renewed Hope Agenda: The Journey so far,” President Tinubu said that only one party was in power and that Nigerians’ dreams were being driven by it.

“Before I speak, I just need to tell those saying one party system is not good, it’s one party ruling and driving the aspirations of Nigerians. Where do they stand?
“You don’t blame a people bailing out of a sinking ship when there is no life jacket. I am glad about what we have and I am expecting more to come. That is the game. We are in a constitutional democracy. Don’t forget the freedom of movement and association are not criminally punishable. Welcome to the progressives. Sweep them clean.”
“We will lead you on to that promised land. The resuscitation of the Nigerian economy is on course, the hope is standing before you, take it on.
“You are the leaders and the conscience of this country. Nigeria will be industrialized. The next two years will be great. We have the mission, we have the vision. To many of you I have not offered political positions, be patient, many things are coming,” he added.
