Labor is calling for the reversal of the electricity tariff hike as protests kick off today.
Today, organized labor across Nigeria is set to begin nationwide protests against the recent electricity tariff hike and the removal of subsidy from the power sector. Labor leaders are demanding a reversal of the tariff hike to the subsidy era. The protests are expected to include picketing of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) offices and power distribution companies’ offices in all 36 states. Despite a recent slight reduction in the tariff hike by NERC, labor unions remain adamant, emphasizing the negative impact of the hike on economic growth and the general populace. Civil society groups have also expressed support for the protests, highlighting the need for policies that alleviate rather than exacerbate the suffering of Nigerians.
