APC accuses Gov Obaseki of intimidation, petitions IGP.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo state has filed a petition with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, alleging executive intimidation and political harassment by Governor Godwin Obaseki ahead of the state’s upcoming Governorship election. The petition, dated June 13, urges the IGP to prevent Governor Obaseki from using the State Police Command to arrest APC’s chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, purportedly on trumped-up charges.
Tenebe, in the petition titled “A Case of Executive Intimidation Political Harassment and Baseless Accusation by the Edo state Governor, Godwin Obaseki,” accuses the governor of deploying various security apparatus to stifle opposition and dissent against his government’s policies. He claims that Governor Obaseki has threatened to deal harshly with anyone opposing him, especially during the election period.
The petition further states that Tenebe has been informed by his party secretariat that the Commissioner of Police has summoned him to answer to a petition allegedly filed by the governor. Tenebe alleges that the governor’s intention is to arrest him during the inauguration of APC’s State Governorship Campaign Council, scheduled for the following day.
Seeking the IGP’s intervention, Tenebe requests that any case against him be transferred to the IGP’s office for discreet investigation, citing unwarranted harassment and abuse of power by Governor Obaseki.
The petition was also copied to the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), highlighting the seriousness with which the APC views the alleged intimidation and harassment orchestrated by the Edo state government.
This move by the APC underscores the tense political atmosphere in Edo state as preparations intensify for the gubernatorial election, with accusations of misuse of state security apparatus for political gain becoming a focal point of contention.
