Falana proposes using recovered funds for minimum wage.
In an interview with Channels Television, human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, emphasized that both federal and state governments possess the financial capacity to pay the national minimum wage, provided they recover looted or withheld funds.
Falana pointed out that the claim of insufficient funds by state governments is not valid because there are significant resources that can be recovered through political will. He specifically highlighted the need for both federal and state authorities to take decisive action in retrieving looted or withheld monies, which could then be allocated towards meeting the minimum wage obligations.
Regarding the ongoing negotiations between organised labour and the federal government on the new minimum wage, Falana noted that while there hasn’t been an agreement yet, the key lies in the government’s commitment to recovering funds that are rightfully due to the federation account.
He urged Nigerian authorities to prioritize the welfare of workers by demonstrating the political resolve to ensure adequate remuneration, despite the current economic challenges and differing proposals on the minimum wage.
