DHQ clarifies that calls for a military coup are treasonous and that the acting chief of army staff will not be appointed.
In contrast to what certain media outlets have speculated, Defence Headquarters (DHQ) would like to make it clear that it has not declared the nomination of any senior officer as the interim Chief of Army Staff (COAS). For the record, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) do not have any such appointments.
As part of his 2024 yearly leave, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, is currently enjoying some well-earned relaxation. Every Service Chief is carrying out their responsibilities as outlined in the FGN Constitution, and the AFN is properly run. The COAS receives regular briefings from Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans.
In compliance with accepted military practices.
The DHQ advises anyone who is propagating baseless rumors to stop right away. The COAS is well and will shortly return to his regular responsibilities after his leave is over.
Before disseminating false information to the public, media outlets are urged to confirm information with the relevant authorities. Just a few minutes ago, the CDS and the COAS had a conversation.
Furthermore, anyone who support a military takeover, as seen in a widely shared video, ought to understand that doing so is illegal under the Constitution.
The AFN is dedicated to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government and is resolute in its commitment to upholding and advancing our democracy. The military is nevertheless committed to fulfilling its legal obligations to safeguard the nations integrity.
