Former Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State has advocated
Former Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State has suggested that state governments should determine their own minimum wage based on their financial capabilities and local economic conditions. Fayemi made this statement during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today. He argued for decentralizing minimum wage negotiations, allowing states to negotiate with their labor unions while the Federal Government conducts its own separate negotiations.
Fayemi noted, “Every governor has to deal with the issue of national minimum wage. When I was governor and chairman of the governor’s forum, and I believe even till this recent negotiation, we should decentralize minimum wage negotiations and allow states to have their own negotiations with their own labor unions whilst the Federal Government conducts its own negotiations because the fingers are not equal” (Channels Television) (Channels Television) (Channels Television).
He emphasized that this decentralized approach would not necessarily mean lower wages for state workers compared to federal workers. Instead, it would allow for more transparent and realistic wage agreements, taking into account each state’s unique economic circumstances and obligations to its population. Fayemi stated that labor unions need to understand the financial limitations and other responsibilities of state governments.
The context of Fayemi’s comments comes amid ongoing national discussions about setting a new minimum wage. The organized labor unions have demanded a minimum wage of N250,000, while the Federal Government has proposed N62,000. President Bola Tinubu has indicated that the minimum wage should be something both the government and citizens can afford.
