#EndBadGovernance: Minister assures action on Welfare of Arraigned Minors
The Nigerian government has pledged to improve the welfare of minors arrested in connection with the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.
Youth Development Minister Ayodele Olawande made this commitment in a statement on Friday, promising that his ministry would address the conditions of these minors and seek to improve their treatment in detention.
Earlier that day, an intense scene unfolded at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where several minors who had been detained for three months appeared malnourished and visibly weak.
Some even collapsed while awaiting their arraignment, causing an uproar in the courtroom.
Eventually, the judge granted them bail with a hefty N10 million bond for each minor, although the prosecutor requested that those who fainted be removed from the charges.
Minister Olawande’s statement reassured the public that the Youth Ministry is actively coordinating with the Ministry of Interior to fully understand the situation and enhance the welfare of all young people held in detention centers nationwide.
He emphasized that the ministry is committed to advocating for Nigerian youth, ensuring their welfare, and safeguarding their interests in all circumstances.
The #EndBadGovernance protests, which ran from August 1 to August 10, were sparked by growing frustration over economic hardship and poor governance.
Protesters rallied against issues such as high government spending, the removal of fuel subsidies, rising food prices, and a lack of fiscal discipline.
Although largely peaceful, some demonstrations turned chaotic, leading to incidents of looting and vandalism in several states.
In response, the authorities carried out arrests across the country, and several protesters, including minors, were later brought before the court.
The minister’s statement aims to address the public outcry over the treatment of the detained minors and assure Nigerians that the government is taking steps to ensure humane treatment and better conditions for all detained youths.
