New terror group emerges in Nigeria, active in Kebbi, Sokoto - DHQ warns

This group, which is apparently tied to Islamist outfits in Mali and Niger, is thought to have moved into Nigeria as a result of political instability in these surrounding countries.
Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, issued a statement on Thursday, November 7, outlining the group’s origins and methods.

“The terrorists took advantage of the gaps in collaboration between both countries and exploited challenging terrain to make incursions in remote areas of certain North Western states to spread their ideology,” the foreign minister stated.

This recent occurrence highlights the increased security challenges in Nigeria’s border regions.

Major General Buba noted that the instability in Mali and Niger has created conditions for terrorist groups to spread their influence outside their usual strongholds, bringing their operations closer to Nigeria. The Defence Headquarters has not yet provided particular information regarding the group’s activities or operational strength.

However, the military stated that it is closely watching the situation and will continue to coordinate efforts to repel any incursions that endanger Nigeria’s sovereignty or the safety of its residents.

As regional crises in West Africa continue, security experts worry that Nigeria’s border states may face new threats.
