The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended one of its prominent members, Senator Dino Melaye, over allegations of anti-party activities.
This decision was made by the PDP ward party executive committee in Ayetoro/Iluagba Ward 1, as revealed in a letter obtained by Punch Online on Friday. The suspension followed a review of a report submitted by a disciplinary committee to investigate Melaye’s conduct.
Melaye’s recent actions were reportedly seen as detrimental to the interests and unity of the PDP, prompting the party’s leadership to take disciplinary measures. This move underscores the PDP’s stance on maintaining party discipline and unity, particularly in cases where members are perceived to be acting against the party’s principles.
A Pattern of Disciplinary Actions in the PDP
The suspension of Senator Melaye is not an isolated incident. The PDP has previously taken similar actions against other members accused of anti-party activities. In August 2024, Peter Babalola, a party chieftain from Osun State, was suspended for alleged anti-party activities, including his absence from party meetings for over two years.
Similarly, the former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, faced suspension by the Benue chapter of the PDP over allegations of anti-party conduct. The party also summoned Senator Gabriel Suswam and other members over accusations of gross misconduct and actions deemed harmful to the party’s cohesion.
These instances highlight the PDP’s firm commitment to enforcing discipline among its ranks and ensuring that members adhere to party rules and values.
Official Statement on Melaye’s Suspension
The official resolution regarding Melaye’s suspension cited his actions as a source of embarrassment and disrepute to the party, stating that his continued membership was no longer acceptable. The statement from the ward party executive committee reads:
“Senator Dino Melaye’s conduct has brought embarrassment and disrepute to the party, and his continued membership is no longer tenable. Therefore, the Ward party exco hereby suspends Dino Melaye from the Peoples Democratic Party, effective immediately. The suspension is in line with provisions of Article 59 (1) of the PDP constitution, which empowers the Ward party excos to take disciplinary actions against erring members.”
As details of the situation continue to emerge, the suspension of Senator Dino Melaye serves as a reminder of the PDP’s resolve to safeguard its integrity and maintain internal discipline. Further updates on the matter are anticipated as the party navigates this latest controversy within its ranks.
