Publish your assets, SERAP tells Tinubu as he clocks First Year Anniversary:
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to mark his first year in office by demonstrating his commitment to democracy, accountability, and transparency. SERAP urged him to publish his asset declaration form and encourage Vice-President Kashim Shettima, ministers, and state governors to do the same.
In an open letter dated May 25, 2024, and signed by SERAP Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization also recommended proposing a constitutional amendment to create a public asset declaration database. This, they argue, would promote public trust and establish transparency and accountability in government.
SERAP emphasized that publishing these asset declarations would enable Nigerians to scrutinize and verify the financial situations of public officials, alerting the public to potential conflicts of interest and corruption. They noted that such transparency is crucial for strengthening democracy and combating corruption.
The organization highlighted that asset declarations are matters of public interest, and officials should not claim privacy rights violations by making these documents public. They urged President Tinubu to fulfill his inaugural promises to discourage corruption and ensure impartial governance.
The call by SERAP is grounded in Nigerian constitutional requirements and international anticorruption obligations, emphasizing the public’s right to access information about the assets of their leaders to build trust and integrity in state institution
