Arewa Youths Push for Death Penalty Legislation for Infrastructure Vandals.
In response to ongoing vandalism of power towers that has left the North East region in darkness for about two months, the Arewa Youth Assembly has urged the National Assembly to enact laws imposing the death penalty on public infrastructure vandals.
The North East coordinator of the group, Dr. Usman Jada, condemned the recent destruction of three power line towers along the Biu-Damboa 132kv transmission line. He labeled the vandals as saboteurs intent on thwarting government efforts to restore power to the region.
Dr. Jada emphasized that unchecked vandalism could extend to other critical infrastructure, hindering regional development. He called for immediate legislative action to deter such destructive behavior.
Additionally, Dr. Jada urged North East stakeholders, including the Vice President, the National Security Adviser, and regional governors, to support efforts by the Minister of Power and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to safeguard essential public facilities. He announced plans for a regional sensitization campaign to highlight the importance of protecting public infrastructure and appealed to security agencies to apprehend those responsible for the vandalism.
