Chelsea Manager Maresca blames Chelsea players for Fulham disappointment.
Enzo Maresca has revealed that part of his disappointment from losing the Christmas fixture going by the name Boxing Day, a 2-1 defeat to Fulham, is that he expected lessons learned from this loss.
She took Chelsea ahead through Cole Palmer’s goal, but they could not maintain that lead through the second 45, only to concede a last-minute double by Harry Wilson and Rodrigo Muniz, sealing history for the visitors at Stamford Bridge. Maresca was particularly frustrated with the way Chelsea conceded the winning goal in stoppage time.
He felt in the first half, Chelsea had managed the game well, denying Fulham too many opportunities on the counter.
He said, however, that his reigning champions allowed the visitors to come into the game too much earlier into the second half before they started to have their little momentum going and turned things around. “For me, it’s a game before attack; you have to give passes, passes, passes because that makes us closer together so that when we lose the ball, we can be aggressive,” said Maresca, adding to his postmortem on the defeat.
But if we want to attack with one or two passes, then we are stretched, we are open, and they can hurt us.
“I am also disappointed, particularly for the way in which we conceded the goal at the end. It feels pretty bad, also since I’ve said it many times: when you can’t win, it’s important not to lose.
For sure, one of the things we could have done better was the game management.”
