In the first El Clasico of the season, Real Madrid lost to Barcelona 4-0 at the Bernabeu, their longtime rivals.
With famous names like Kylian Mbappe and new Barca manager Hansi Flick giving Spain’s most intense rivalry a new dimension, this season’s first El Clásico was plenty of drama.
Mbappe was intent on making an impression right away, striking the side netting and putting Jude Bellingham in position for a close-range attempt that Barça’s Iñaki Peña saved. The France captain also came very close to scoring from a distance after a mistake by Pau Cubarsí.
Early on, Barça had their own opportunities when Andriy Lunin denied teenage sensation Lamine Yamal in a one-on-one match.
Mbappé believed that his deft chip had put Real ahead, but it was declared offside. Shortly after, Lunin had to extend to stop Pedri’s deft shot. Making everyone aware that Barça was still actively involved in the battle.
In the 54th minute, Robert Lewandowski broke the tie by coolly putting the ball past Lunin
After racing onto a pass from Marc Casado. Two minutes later, he scored once more with a forceful header from Alejandro Balde’s cross, frightening the Bernabeu crowd and giving Barça a 2-0 lead.
After missing a shot from Yamal’s cross and striking the post with a Raphinha cutback, Lewandowski came very close to completing a hat-trick. Mbappe came near once more as Real Madrid tried to rally, but Yamal’s brilliant angled finish from Raphinha’s ball in the 77th minute gave Barça their third goal, effectively ending the match. Shortly after, Raphinha himself completed a fantastic evening for Barcelona by chipping the ball over Lunin to make it 4-0.
