Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, is teaming up with Nigeria to boost the country’s digital economy. During a visit to Abuja, Meta’s President of Global Affairs, Sir Nick Clegg, announced a new feature coming to Instagram in June 2024. This feature will allow Nigerian content creators to monetize their content, allowing them to earn a living directly through the platform.

Clegg Praises Nigeria’s Tech Infrastructure Efforts

Sir Clegg also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s focus on information and communication technology (ICT). He highlighted the significance of a Meta-backed deep-sea cable project currently underway in Nigeria. This powerful subsea cable, expected to be operational in early 2025, has the potential to significantly increase internet capacity across Africa, potentially leading to billions of dollars in economic activity.

Nigeria Aims to be Africa’s Tech Leader

President Tinubu reciprocated the enthusiasm, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to making Nigeria the leading ICT hub in Africa. He outlined various initiatives, including the “3MTT program,” which aims to train three million Nigerian youths in digital skills and prepare them for careers in the tech industry.

Collaboration for a Mutually Beneficial Future

Both parties expressed a desire for deeper collaboration. President Tinubu emphasized Nigeria’s talented young population and commitment to fostering innovation. He stressed the importance of data and technological advancements for driving economic growth, particularly for small businesses. Sir Clegg echoed the sentiment, highlighting the need for a “win-win” partnership that benefits both parties.

The visit signifies a strong alliance between Meta and Nigeria, with a focus on empowering creators, developing digital infrastructure, and propelling Nigeria to the forefront of Africa’s technological revolution.
