US-Iran Talks: Tehran Proposes Two-Day Plan to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced a proposed 48-hour plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, developed through consultations with Qatari mediators.

Under the proposal, the United States would implement a set of required measures on the first day, allowing Iran to resume normal navigation through the strategic waterway on the second day.

The phased reopening remains conditional on U.S. compliance with Iranian demands, which include lifting sanctions, releasing frozen Iranian assets, restoring oil waivers, and recognizing specific shipping routes through the strait.

“I can say that we have now reached a two-day plan. This means that on the first day, the U.S. implements a set of measures, and on the second day, the Strait of Hormuz reopens and transit returns to its previous state,” Clash Report quoted Araghchi as saying.

Shortened version

Following discussions with Qatari mediators, Iranian officials shortened the initial seven-day proposal to a 48-hour timeline.

Reports from outlets including Al Jazeera and The Washington Times note that Araghchi’s statement remains a proposal rather than a finalized agreement.

Negotiations remain ongoing, with no firm decision reached.

However, Araghchi indicated that discussions are progressing toward implementation.

Conditional on US move

The proposed two-day sequence remains contingent on U.S. action, as Washington has not formally endorsed or publicly accepted the framework.

Reports indicate that any final agreement depends on the United States meeting Iranian demands, including the lifting of sanctions.

The blockage of the Strait of Hormuz—a vital global energy chokepoint—during the U.S.-Israel military campaign against Iran has triggered a major global energy crisis. Meanwhile, Qatar continues mediating between Washington and Tehran to lower the risk of further escalation and restart diplomatic negotiations.

Backstory…

Recall that in September, Iran proposed a seven-day roadmap to reopen the strait in exchange for a halt to fighting, the lifting of the US blockade and sanctions, and the release of frozen Iranian assets.

President Donald Trump rejected the proposal, insisting that Iran must address its nuclear programme.
