The World Bank Group has officially opened applications for its 2027 Africa Fellowship Programme, offering an opportunity for talented Nigerian researchers and other eligible scholars across Sub-Saharan Africa to gain international experience in development research and policymaking.
The prestigious fellowship is aimed at exceptional young academics who are either completing their doctoral studies or have recently earned a PhD in disciplines linked to international development. Successful applicants will spend six months working with World Bank experts, contributing to projects that tackle some of Africa’s most pressing development challenges while strengthening their own research and professional skills.
For many Nigerian scholars, the programme represents more than another academic fellowship. It provides direct exposure to one of the world’s leading development institutions, allowing participants to work alongside economists, policy specialists and researchers whose work shapes development strategies across Africa and beyond.
Applications opened on July 15, 2026, and interested candidates have until August 25, 2026, to submit their applications through the official fellowship portal. The selected fellows are expected to begin their placements in January 2027.

Who Can Apply and What Fellows Will Receive
According to the World Bank Group, applicants must be nationals of a Sub-Saharan African country, including Nigeria. Candidates should either be in the final year of their PhD programme or have completed their doctorate within the past three years.
Applicants are also expected to demonstrate excellent analytical abilities, strong quantitative research skills and proficiency in written and spoken English. Another key requirement is that applicants must be 32 years old or younger as of January 1, 2027. Women are strongly encouraged to apply as part of the institution’s commitment to increasing gender representation in development research.
Selected fellows will be appointed as Extended Term Consultants for a six-month period. During the fellowship, they may be based at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, DC, or at selected World Bank country offices, depending on organisational needs.
Rather than serving as observers, fellows become active members of project teams. They contribute to economic research, policy analysis, technical assistance and development operations while working closely with experienced professionals from different parts of the world. The programme is fully funded, enabling participants to focus on research, collaboration and professional development without bearing the financial burden associated with international placements.
Beyond the technical experience, fellows also gain access to valuable professional networks that often continue long after the programme ends. Many former participants have gone on to build successful careers in universities, government agencies, research institutes and international organisations, with some later joining the World Bank itself.
Back Story
The World Bank Group Africa Fellowship Programme was created to strengthen Africa’s capacity in development research while building a pipeline of highly skilled African professionals capable of addressing complex economic and social challenges.
Every year, the initiative identifies outstanding young researchers from across Sub-Saharan Africa and places them within World Bank teams where they can contribute fresh ideas while receiving practical exposure to global development work.
Over the years, the fellowship has supported scholars working in fields such as economics, agriculture, education, climate change, digital transformation, public policy, infrastructure, governance, health, energy and sustainable development.
The programme also seeks to reduce the gap between academic research and practical policymaking by giving emerging African researchers the opportunity to see how evidence is translated into real-world development decisions. This approach has helped create a growing network of African experts contributing to development across governments, universities, international organisations and the private sector.

Why the Fellowship Matters for Nigerian Researchers
Nigeria remains home to some of Africa’s largest universities and research institutions, producing thousands of postgraduate students each year. However, many young researchers face limited opportunities to participate in international research collaborations or gain practical policy experience within global institutions.
The World Bank Africa Fellowship offers a pathway to bridge that gap by combining academic excellence with practical development work. Fellows are exposed to multidisciplinary teams tackling issues such as poverty reduction, economic growth, digital innovation, education reform, climate resilience and sustainable infrastructure.
For Nigerian scholars hoping to influence national and regional development policies, the fellowship provides an opportunity to sharpen research skills while contributing to projects with measurable impact across Africa.
With the application window now open, eligible candidates are encouraged to begin preparing their documents early, ensuring they meet all eligibility requirements before the August 25 deadline. The programme remains one of the continent’s most competitive development fellowships and continues to attract applications from some of Africa’s brightest emerging researchers.
