EFCC reveals plan to partner with NUJ over illegal mining, cyber crime
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have disclosed their willingness to work together to combat cybercrime and illicit mining in Niger State.

This was said by Bawa Usman Kaltungo, the acting EFCC Zonal Director in charge of the Kaduna Zonal Directorate, who led a team from his office to the Niger State Council’s NUJ in Minna.

He clarified that the EFCC cannot fight these crimes alone because they are too large for the commission to manage; hence, cooperation with the NUJ is required.

He said, “This collaboration aims to leverage the media’s strategic role in combating corruption and promoting transparency,”

According to the commission’s Zonal Director, the EFCC has arrested four Chinese nationals and twenty-one others in Jos, Plateau State, along with thirty-three other unlicensed miners who will shortly stand trial.

The commission is stepping up its efforts to combat cybercrime in Niger State, which has turned into a refuge for hackers, he further disclosed.

He revealed that intelligence gathering has led to the arrest of several internet fraudsters.

In response, Comrade Abu Nmodu, the State Chairman of the NUJ, expressed concern over the growing cybercrime in Niger State and promised to collaborate with the financial crimes commission.

“We want Nigerians to know that the officers who raided the places are not illegal EFCC agents but are our men” he added.

Additionally, the chairman requested for training on best practices for reporting the EFCC’s actions for its members.
