Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has opened up about the impact record labels can have on an artist’s mental health and emotional wellbeing.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast hosted by Joey Akan, the singer said she only fully understood the importance of a supportive label after leaving Mavin Records.
Tiwa Savage explained that while at Mavin, she often leaned on label boss Don Jazzy and fellow label mates whenever she faced online controversies or emotional challenges.
According to her, the environment at Mavin felt like a family, as they would gather together, talk through issues, and support one another emotionally whenever necessary.
She, however, noted that her experience with an international label has been different, saying foreign labels are usually more business-focused and less involved in artists’ personal struggles.
The singer added that upcoming artists should carefully consider whether a record label genuinely cares about their wellbeing or only sees them as a source of profit.
Tiwa Savage joined Mavin Records in 2012 before leaving in 2019 to sign with Universal Music Group.
Despite her exit, she maintained that Mavin Records still feels like family to her.
