President Bola Tinubu’s former ministers have had mixed fortunes after leaving the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to contest elective offices ahead of the 2027 elections.

The President directed political appointees seeking elective office to resign before participating in party primaries, and five former cabinet members complied with the order. The Electoral Act of 2026 supported that directive. However, only two of the former ministers have secured party tickets so far.

Yusuf Tuggar, a former minister of foreign affairs, resigned in order to run for governor of Bauchi State with the All Progressives Congress (APC). But was defeated by former governor Mohammed Abubakar.

Similarly, former Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs Yusuf Sununu, who initially contested for the Kebbi South senatorial ticket, and former Minister of Transportation Saidu Alkali, who entered the Gombe governorship race, also faced setbacks.

Additionally, former minister of power, Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who contested the Oyo governorship primary lost out as well.

The former Minister of Power, Adelabu, who resigned after the deadline set by the President, failed to secure the APC governorship ticket in Oyo State.

Following the result, Adelabu alleged manipulation and insisted that the primary did not reflect the true wishes of party members.

He also vowed to challenge the outcome before the party’s national leadership.
