Over 30 Vehicles Seized as FCT Police Enforce Tinted Glass Ban

In a major security clampdown, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has seized more than 30 vehicles for operating with unauthorised tinted glass, hidden license plates, and invalid registrations. Crucially, this action marks the official kickoff of a rigorous enforcement campaign against tinted automobiles across Abuja.

Addressing journalists on Friday, FCT Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi explained that the command launched the crackdown following explicit directives from the Inspector-General of Police.

According to him, intelligence reports revealed that criminal syndicates deliberately use these obscured vehicles to mask their identities, evade detection, and facilitate violent crimes—such as kidnappings and notorious “one-chance” highway robberies.

He said: “The IG has given us the mandate to begin the enforcement of the ban on the use of tinted vehicles and other offences as earlier stated.

“Intelligence reports at the disposal of the command indicate that many criminal elements deliberately use such vehicles to conceal their identities, evade detection, and frustrate law enforcement efforts. This poses a serious threat to public safety.”

The police commissioner clarified that the tinted glass enforcement action was carried out in response to an order to start enforcing rules that forbade the use of tinted glasses and other traffic infractions that might facilitate criminal activity.

He claimed that as a result, the command had initiated a thorough operation to target vehicles that were breaking the rules.

The commissioner issued a warning that the detained vehicles’ owners and operators will face legal action in compliance with applicable legislation.

BACKSTORY…

Meanwhile, this comes just hours after a fierce gunbattle with a gang of suspected kidnappers.  Operatives from the FCT Police Command successfully foiled an abduction attempt in Abuja’s Byazhin neighborhood early Friday morning. In a triumphant turn of events, officers rescued a couple entirely unharmed from the clutches of the criminals.

Furthermore, during the chaotic retreat, the fleeing suspects abandoned an AK-47 rifle, a loaded magazine, and seven rounds of live ammunition. Consequently, police teams scouring the scene quickly recovered the lethal weapons cache.

The police boss maintained that the crackdown was part of broader efforts to improve security and deny criminals the means of operating undetected within the nation’s capital.

Also recall that the Force previously paused nationwide enforcement of the policy on January 1, 2026. Specifically, this suspension came in direct response to an interim court order that legally prohibited its implementation.
