The Action Alliance in Zamfara State has condemned the attack on its 2027 presidential candidate, Adekunle Rufai Omoaje, describing the incident as a threat to democracy.
The party made its position known in a statement released on Sunday in Gusau by its state chairman, Shehu Hussaini Waziri.
According to Waziri, the attack took place on Saturday during a burial ceremony in Ekusa, located in Odo Otin Local Government Area.
He described the incident as an attempt to intimidate opposition parties and weaken democratic values in the country.
Waziri called on security agencies to launch a full investigation into the attack and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
He stressed that Omoaje and his supporters remain committed to justice, peaceful coexistence and national development despite the incident.
The party also appealed to its members and supporters to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding while security agencies carry out their investigations, adding that the safety of political actors and citizens is crucial for the protection of Nigeria’s democracy.
BACKSTORY:
The attack on Adekunle Rufai Omoaje comes amid growing political activities and rising tensions as parties begin positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections. Omoaje, who has been active in mobilising support for the Action Alliance, has increasingly emerged as one of the opposition voices seeking to expand the party’s influence nationwide.
Political gatherings and public appearances have become more frequent in recent months as aspirants and party leaders intensify consultations, alliance-building and grassroots engagement ahead of the polls. However, concerns over the safety of political actors have also grown, with several parties warning against intimidation, violence and actions capable of threatening democratic participation.
The incident in Osun State has now added to broader concerns over political security in Nigeria, with opposition figures urging authorities to ensure a level playing field and protect democratic rights as the election season gradually approaches.
